Textile Treasures at Mia
It’s been a hot and humid one in the Twin Cities lately, which means it is the perfect time to tour our air conditioned attractions. A quick trip to Mia (Minneapolis Institute of Art) turned into a special afternoon as they currently have some special textiles on view.
“Without Boundaries” features fiber sculptures on a massive scale. My first instinct as I walked through the door was to plop in front of the rainbow of yarn balls cross-legged on the floor with my chin in my hands. However, the adult in me won and I sat on the bench to take it all in instead.
The examples of period clothing in “The Art of High Style” are beautifully presented with contextual artwork. I was transported back to my time as a costume shop stitcher for my college theatre department. The engineering that went into undergarments is fascinating. I got as close as I could to study the structure of the skirt supporter and the hem lifter displayed with its original operating instructions (do you have clothing with an owner’s manual?!?).
